Watch a Post, or Subscribe to the Blog

Site news · Two buttons — a bell for the blog, an eye for a post

In brief. Every post here now opens with a Subscribe to the blog button, and a post that keeps changing — a Frequently Updated post, like Server Watch — carries a second one: Watch Post. Two different promises, so they got two different shapes: a bell for the blog, an eye for the post.

What each button promises

Subscribe to the blog (the bell, at the top of every post) fires when a new article is published — and only then. Edits to old posts never ring it. When you are subscribed, a small green check sits on the bell.

Watch Post (the eye, beside the Frequently Updated badge) fires when that post changes — for Server Watch, when the running list is re-checked and updated. While you are watching, the eye stays open wide, and blinks now and then. It seemed honest: a watching eye should look awake.

How it works

These are browser notifications. There is no account and no email address to hand over: your browser holds an anonymous subscription, and a tap on the notification opens the post. On iPhone, browser notifications need this site added to your Home Screen first (Share → Add to Home Screen, iOS 16.4+).

Turning them off is yours, not ours: block the site in your browser's notification settings and the next push to the dead endpoint removes it from the list automatically. Nothing else is tracked — the list is a file of endpoints, one per browser, and an endpoint is all it ever knows.
